Halou/Stripmall Architecture

San Francisco's Halou has always operated comfortably outside of the spotlight, often preferring to flex its muscle in the studio through working on tracks by established acts like DJ Shadow, Radiohead, No Doubt, and even Rod Stewart (the band's remix of Stewart's classic 'Da Ya Think I'm Sexy' hit #1 on Billboard's dance chart), in addition to producing their own critically-acclaimed recordings and scoring for film and television. Many do know, however, that the band has developed a powerful live show over the years, which culminated in a full US tour earlier this year with alt-rock legend Bob Mould. As far as songwriter-producer Ryan Coseboom is concerned, this cracked a world of possibilities wide open: "Being on a big rock tour was like waking up from a dream. We've always been quite proud of our live show, but Rebecca and I became very aware of a hundred things that we'd like to do better and we've been working on those things every day since our return with the help of some amazing musicians." Shortly after returning from the road, Ryan and his longtime collaborator and wife, Rebecca Coseboom, formed a new project they christened STRIPMALL ARCHITECTURE. "The name is tongue-in-cheek, definitely, but we've grown up around stripmalls and they've come to represent a lot of the negative feelings people have about their surroundings. We thought people might have strange reactions to it - and they have." In their live performances, STRIPMALL ARCHITECTURE thrives on experimentation. At an exclusive event in San Francisco recently, they performed as a trio (with cellist Erica Mulkey) using typewriters, xylophones, wine glasses, and an extensive collection of esoteric instruments to achieve their unique sound. For this next Nectar Lounge performance, they intend to play as a six-piece band incorporating both their 'eclectic' and 'rock' approaches. In another unique twist, STRIPMALL ARCHITECTURE will be trying something new at this next live performance: thumb drives. Bring a thumb drive to the performance and STRIPMALL ARCHITECTURE will load free music onto it. (Thumb drives will be available for sale for those who forget theirs).
